April 5 and 7, 2017
Four work hours

Completed box PMS 7A, which only leaves one more box to go through. On Friday the 7th I meet with Prof. Shott to go over my progress and plan where I need to be by the end of the semester. We will be meeting every two weeks from now on to keep track of my progress so close to the end of the semester. The main elements left in the project is to make an excel record of the material and writing up a report on the condition, exhibit and educational uses and recommendation on what to do with the material.

Work on March 8, 10,13,15, 17

Continued to work through the boxes and the end of the day on 3/17 I only have a one and half boxes left. The goal is to complete going through the boxes and cataloging all the material before the Spring break at the end of the day on March 24. Tuesday, 3/21 Dr. Vinyard will be helping me identify some of the bone material and determine if one object is a horse tooth and if any of the other bones can be identified.

March 6, 2017
2 hours

Looking through the articles and the excavation notes and noticed that after the first dig in 1984 an exhibit entitled "Garbage Made Good: Excavating the Perkins Privy" was created and displayed at the John Brown House. It was organized by Shelly Edwards from Mount Union, History Major that also conducted an extensive research on the material found. However, I have not found any of this research. Artifacts included Sewing articles, glassware, pottery, china, and bottles. The trenches dug reached a depth of about five feet.

The dig that was conducted the next year was not in the same location. This time they were focused on the cow barn in the northwest of the corner of the Mansion lawn, adjacent to Portage Path. Fewer amounts of material were found in this area than in the previous one, even though they dug up nearly the entire length and breath of the barn's foundation. Depths of over three feet in areas. They did find large numbers of stoneware and china pieces as well as ginger jars, beer bottles, and milk crocks. They also found different layers of foundation and piles of old roof gutter and downspout pieces, a vegetable chopper, metal nails, broken bottle, brick sections of flooring and several glass insulators.

Feb. 20-21
2:30-5:00

Completed the inventory of box PSM 3 A and B and half of PSM 4. I did make an interesting discovery with finding in an earlier bag this black disk with a theater face. However, when looking through a bag later found two small containers one without a lid and had white contents. The one with the lid was covered in rust and rusted shut, but I did notice the that the lid had the same image as the earlier bag. I think the first black lid belonged to the container without a lid. Image of all three bellow.

2/17/2017
2:30-5:00

Continued to look through box three and have only 3 or 4 bags left. It looks like this might be the first box from the 84' excavation and not mixed in material from Lot 3. Plan on finishing Monday and perhaps start my digital record of the material cataloged so far.

2/13/2017
Friday 9:30-10:45 and Monday 2:30-5:00

Friday: Located several newsletters relating to the 1984 dig as well as a summer camp lead by Liz Mancz in 1995 that seems to be confused several times with the 84' dig.

Learned at the SHS that the toy like material found in the first two boxes I went through are from the Lot 3 material. I will document all the boxes and then decide what to do with the Lot 3 material.

Monday: Completed box two and began on box three that seemed to hold the material related to the PSM dig of 84' but I did not finish this box.

P.S. Eric told me that Ted found another box related to the Perkins Stone Mansion at the Historical Society, I will email to determine when to gather the new box.

2/6/17: 2:00-5:00

Met with Fran at the Cummings Center where the collection is located. We developed a plan of what needs to be accomplished. As part of the plan, we set up a list of factors to take note of when going through the boxes.

Created a new code for the boxes PSM #, I was able to get through one and a half boxes, noted old box numbers and bag numbers. A lot of the material in the first box look to be from a toy factory with lots of molded boots and small pots.

1/20/17

I have located two documents relating to the project at the Perkins Stone Mansion through Eric Olson. One is the proposal and excavation report, written by Earl L. Ertman on September 10, 1984. Spoke to the curator (Ted) at SHS who informed me the only other possible documentation is in the Newsletters for the SHS. Need to contact and set up a meeting to look through them.

"Look for contact information for Earl L. Ertman, dead or alive?"
(2 Hours)
